Product Overview

Through the application of phenomenological semantics, this book offers a new approach towards understanding modal logic and its philosophical implications. It is directed primarily to phenomenologists, but also addresses analytic philosophers and philosophically interested logicians. Over a century ago, mathematics and logic developed into abstract disciplines. This process eventually led to their unification, which Husserl termed Mathesis Universalis'. The Mathesis Universalis was not only the source of Husserl's own philosophical work, but also is the context within which modern modal logic ought to be understood. The phenomenological explication of modal logic, considered as an abstract discipline of the Mathesis Universalis, requires detailed analyses of the genesis of modalisation that extend deep into the cognitive structures of prelinguistic perception. This phenomenological understanding of modalisation offers two advantages. Firstly, the serious difficulties facing modal logic in the fields of epistemology and ontology, especially as put forward in the framework of analytic philosophy, can be resolved. Secondly, the fact that the concept of proof can be understood as a mathematical modality opens the way to a precise phenomenological determination of the relationship between logic and mathematics.
