Product Overview

Shocking, outrageous, and poetic, Jigoku (Hell) is the most innovative creation from Nobuo Nakagawa, the father of the Japanese horror film. After a young theology student flees a hit-and-run accident, he is plagued by both his own guilt-ridden conscience and a mysterious, diabolical doppelganger. But all possible escape routes lead to Hell - literally. In the gloriously gory final third of the film, Nakagawa offers up his vision of the underworld in a tour-de-force of torture and degradation. A striking departure from traditional Japanese ghost stories thanks to its truly eye-popping (and gouging) imagery, Jigoku created aftershocks that are still reverberating in cinema around the world today.System Requirements:Running Time: 101 MinutesFormat: DVD MOVIE

ReviewSource Appreciating Great Trash
Review There are currently two major trends in Japanese horror, the 'Asian shock' subgenre of extreme graphic-violence crossed with taboo perversion...and the 'J-horror' subgenre of ireal depictions of normality coming apart at the seams...Both can be traced back to Jigoku ("Hell"), which begins with a bizarre character inexplicably breaking down reality and ends with explicitly horrific scenes of Hell which prefigure Herschell Gordon Lewis's first gore-flicks by three years...The scenes in Hell are magnificent, easily up there with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in terms of pure expressionistic visualization, but the hour of dramatic lead-up is unnotable at best; the film is well-shot but shakily put-together...
