Review One of the more spectacular misfires of recent years, "Land of the Blind's" lack of originality is only slightly exceeded by its failure to work as political satire. Perhaps this tale of dictators and revolution looked better on paper, when stars Ralph FiennesRalph Fiennes and Donald SutherlandDonald Sutherland came on board, but it's hard to see how the jumbled reasoning and tasteless jokes could have escaped notice. The question is not whether American helmer Robert Edwards' feature debut gets a release, but how long it can withstand critical onslaught.

Review Land of the Blind is a labored pastiche of familiar dystopian motifs that beats the same, totalitarian-themed drum over and over again: Absolute power corrupts, whether you're a dictator or T.S. Eliot-quoting dissident. Not exactly the most earth-shattering revelation, but then again, originality is in scant supply in director Robert Edwards' first film. He doesn't so much write and direct the film as scavenge elements from other films, plays, and books for his drearily futuristic portrait of a nameless country in the grip of dictators. There are some mildly amusing bits of satirical humor, but despite the efforts of a cast led by Ralph Fiennes and Donald Sutherland, Land of the Blind is predictable bore.
