When you reach your early 20s and face the daunting challenges of real life, there are those who choose to embark on a career path and those who'd rather goof off with pals. And then, every so often, there's someone who sets out to do both. Set in Chicago, The Loop is the story of Sam (Bret Harrison), who's the youngest executive at the corporate headquarters of a major airline and the first of his friends to get a real job. He must find a way to straddle his serious career and his serious social demands.
On the clock, Sam strives to meet the relentless demands of his boss Russ (Philip Baker Hall) while dodging the nonstop advances of his colleague Meryl (Mimi Rogers) and managing his overqualified and somewhat bitter secretary Darcy (Joy Osmanski). Off the clock, Sam must prevent his older and rowdier brother Sully (Eric Christian Olsen) from keeping the party going and possibly destroying his career. Moreover, Sam is a hero for everyone who has ever tried to work hard and play hard at the same time.
Both loopy and virtually laugh-free, "The Loop" has been significantly revised but not much improved since Fox ordered it last spring, apparently hoping that high energy and a stunningly attractive cast can obscure its shortcomings. The show basically approximates that commercial where a young guy is working an office job and his dorky friends keep bugging him, as a generic twentysomething dude seeks to prove he can straddle adult obligations and youthful pastimes by partying all night and working all day. Sorry, but been there, drank that...Foremost, "The Loop" feels like a pallid alter ego of Fox's much more promising "Free Ride," which bowed earlier this month. Even the visual gimmickry, which includes little onscreen flashcards saying things like "So into her," has all the flavor of airline peanuts.
