Product Overview

Melanie (Deborah Francois, L'Enfant) is a young woman whose ambitions as a concert pianist were dashed as a child by the thoughtless behavior of the jury chairwoman, a famous pianist named Madame Fouchecourt (Catherine Frot, The Dinner Game) during her exam. Ten years later, Melanie sets up an elaborate plan for revenge and soon begins to ingratiate herself into the family. Unrecognized by Madame Fouchecourt, Melanie becomes her trusted "page turner" as both women prepare for the performance of a lifetime.

Review It's tempting to compare Denis Dercourt's The Page Turner to the 1992 thriller-chiller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, but to do so is unfair to both films--and, indeed, each appeals to its own cadre of fans, who possess widely divergent tastes...Whereas Hand frequently ventured over the top, this 2006 French suspenser is a study in restraint. We know from early in the film (even from published descriptions) that 10-year-old Melanie Provoust has her hopes of becoming a concert pianist dashed early on (it's not clear to most of us ham-handed, non-conservatory-bound amateurs whether her character has overreacted or is actually doomed by what occurs). In any case, the young girl quits playing and locks away her dreams...Ten years later, Melanie (Deborah Francois, employing a low-affect style that suits the film) finds--or places--herself in the life of concert pianist Ariane Fouchecourt (played with subtlety by Catherine Frot), who is, Melanie believes, responsible for her lost hopes...Audiences for Dercourt's film don't expect a bloodbath, and may wonder what Melanie, short of employing an Uzi, can do to harm her employers. The answer is hinted at all along, but Dercourt never quite tips his hand. The fact that we later say "Oh, of course" is a testament to the subtle skill of this quietly suspenseful film.

Review Hell hath no fury like a budding young pianist scorned in "La tourneuse de pages," a tight little emotional thriller about a music lover who becomes a musician-hater. Scripter-helmer Denis Dercourt's sixth feature is spare but classy, with an impressively controlled perf by Deborah Francois (the young mother in the Dardenne Bros.' "L'enfant") opposite popular and spot-on vet Catherine Frot...A professional viola player and conservatory professor who moonlights as a filmmaker, Dercourt has chronicled the lives of musicians with humor ("The Freelancers") and without ("My Children Are Different"). The tone here is inelectably sinister. The music and camera angles intimate that bad things are being orchestrated -- but just how many movements will be played out is up for grabs until nearly the end...Frot convinces as an imperious artist whose talent is intact but whose nerves are shot in the wake of an unfortunate setback. Francois, who seemed every inch the devastated working class teen mother in "L'enfant," is self-possessed and coolly calculating, to excellent effect...Performances of pieces by Shostakovich, J.S. Bach and Schubert are perfectly integrated with a contempo score that facilitates a mood of expectant unease.
