Review [Treasure] When you think of Long John Silver, Robert Newton immediately jumps to mind -- not just the winking scowl, but that crackling har har har mates! voice, too. Pity then that the only reason this kid-friendly Island is truly memorable is Newton...This is a movie for kids who want to ride along with Jim. They won't envy his hairdo, but they'll dig the fact that he gets to strap on a musket.

Review [Captain] Laughton is great as Captain Kidd. Obviously, Laughton is not your typical pretty boy actor, so perhaps that's why the producers took a more cerebral approach to his portrayal of Kidd. Laughton uses some facial expressions, which brings to mind his unforgettable performance as Quasimodo. Instead, Randolph Scott gets the pretty boy role, but Scott rises above the conventions of a baby face, and exhibits a tougher-than-nails demeanor (that probably comes from years of playing heavies in Western movies). Barbara Britton brings a touch of class to her portrayal of Lady Ann.

Review [Black] Fairbanks's astonishing acrobatics remain dazzling today, and the climactic battle includes some great underwater footage of an aquatic assault on the pirates. This film includes Fairbanks' most famous and widely copied stunt, riding down a sail on the edge of a knife; but my favorite is the scene in which he cuts loose the corner of a billowing sail and then holds on as the wind carries him up off the deck of the ship and high into the rigging.

Barrie Maxwell, DVD Verdict [Captain] ...the story entertains and it's ably directed by Rowland V. Lee.
Gregory Weinkauf, New Times [Black] The best stunts were actually performed by Richard Talmadge, but Fairbanks is captivating.
