Product Overview

The multifaceted, deeply personal dramatic universe of Eric Rohmer has had an effect on cinema unlike any other. Gently existential, hyperarticulate character studies set against vivid seasonal landscapes, Rohmer's audacious and wildly influential series defined a genre. A succession of jousts between fragile men and the women who tempt them, the Six Moral Tales unleashed onto the film world a new voice, one that was at once sexy, philosophical, modern, daring, nonjudgmental, and liberating.

Six-disc box set includes the films: The Bakery Girl of Monceau, Suzanne's Career, My Night at Maud's, La Collectionneuse, Claire's Knee and Love in the Afternoon.

Review [Bakery] Monceau is under half an hour long, but many of Rohmer's stylistic traits and themes are already in place. The use of voiceover is one, but what the young man tells us is not necessarily to be taken at face value. Rohmer always views his characters with an ironic distance, men especially, and what the voiceover says does not always tally with what we see on screen...shot in black and white 16mm with Rohmer's trademark unobtrusive naturalism. The visuals are no more than functional, but do give a strong documentary-like sense of early 60s Paris.

Review [Night] Eric Rohmer presents a fascinating, clever, and insightful film on principles, faith, and love in "My Night at Maud's", the third film (first full length feature) in Rohmer's remarkable examination of morality in contemporary society, "Six Moral Tales". Rohmer abandons reverse angles and panning shots in favor of filming individual characters through extended takes, composed of medium shots. The result is a visual sense of dialogue between the actor and the audience. "My Night at Maud's" is a refreshingly simple, yet profound observation on the exhilarating process of love...

Review [Knee] Rohmer has an uncanny ability to make his actors seem as if they were going through the experiences they portray. The acting of Beatrice Romand, as sixteen-year-old Laura, is especially good in this respect; she isn't as pretty as her sister, but we feel somehow she'll find more enjoyment in life because she is a...well, a better person underneath. Jean-Claude Brialy is excellent in a difficult role. He has to relate with three women in the movie, and yet remain implicitly faithful to the unseen Lucinda. He does, and since the sexuality in his performance is suppressed, it is, of course, all the more sensuous.

Review [La] Rohmer was always a classicist; 35 years after its initial release, La Collectionneuse looks positively Victorian, mod haircuts and lame miniskirts notwithstanding. Though the subject matter probably flirted with the standards of the time, this story of two men who become concerned about a female friend's promiscuousness now seems as current as a lava lamp or beaded curtains -- Rohmer arguably wants to step past his characters' self-obsession into a more timeless consideration of sexual mores, but he doesn't make the leap.
