Simplicty Perfection and Joy

by John-Hans Melcher on 9/18/2006

When I popped this CD in the player, I was carried away with it's joy, simplicity, and finesse. The production takes 'raw and simple' and captures it on disk! The instrumental voicing of the horn sections are magical...the rhythmic flow of the rhythm section captures your body and takes you on a nice ride. The actual instruments are played to perfection and with ease. These are pros! This is a magic CD with a human touch that Pete Seeger always seemed to capture. I visited Pete at his home in May 2005 and was embraced with his earthy quality and human grace. This CD captures that feeling! Wanna feel good? Buy this CD and be embraced with professional simplicity, joy and perfection. Life is good when you're listening to this CD.

I am a diehard fan of Springsteen. I love the Irish flare in this album. Great music, worth having. Arrived in a very timely manner. I would recommend buying this album for any Springsteen fan out there.

Product Overview

Bruce Springsteen is certainly no stranger to acoustic-based, folk-inspired music. He began his career as a post-Dylan troubadour, and he's been making "unplugged" albums as far back as 1982's Nebraska. He's already recorded Woody Guthrie material, so it's not a shock that he would release a tribute album to folk icon Pete Seeger. We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessionscelebrates not just Seeger's musical influence, of course, but also the political stands the singer took, which obviously resonate with the famously progressive Springsteen.

Unlike Nebraska, though, this is no bare-bones affair. The E Street Band may be absent, but Bruce tackles Seeger's tunes in classic larger-than-life Boss style, with a huge band that includes several string players, a horn section, accordion, and more. Incorporating everything from Dixieland to zydeco into the folk/blues template, Bruce stirs up a rowdy cauldron of Americana teeming with as much pure human passion as social import. We Shall Overcomeis likely to be one of the biggest albums ever made under the "traditional folk" banner, but it's full of small surprises as Springsteen gets to the spiritual and musical heart of the matter.

This special DVD + CD Set inclues 5 bonus tracks, 4 new videos, an expanded documentary and expanded booklet.

Artist Bio
Bruce SpringsteenBruce Frederick Springsteen (born September 23, 1949) is an American rock and folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Springsteen has frequently recorded and toured with the E Street Band, in addition to recording and performing as a solo artist and with other musicians. An heir to Elvis Presley, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Eddie Cochrane and Bob Dylan, but also influenced by early 1960s rock and R & B, Springsteen is most widely known for his brand of heartland rock infused with pop hooks, poetic lyrics, and Americana sentiments centered around his native New Jersey. His eloquence in expressing ordinary, everyday problems has earned him numerous awards, including several Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with a very large, devoted, and long-lasting fan base. His most famous albums, Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A., epitomize his penchant for finding grandeur in the struggles of daily life.Springsteen's lyrics often concern men and women struggling to make ends meet. He has gradually become identified with progressive politics. Springsteen is also noted for his support of various relief and rebuilding efforts in New Jersey and elsewhere and for his response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, on which his album The Rising reflects.Springsteen's recordings have tended to alternate between commercially accessible rock albums and somber folk-oriented works. Much of Springsteen's iconic status in America as well as his popularity abroad stems from his concert performances - marathon shows, up to four hours in length, in which he and the E Street Band energetically perform intense ballads, rousing anthems, and party rock and roll songs, with Springsteen telling long whimsical or deeply emotional stories in between.Springsteen has long had the nickname The Boss, a term which he was initially reported to dislike but now seems to have come to terms with - he sometimes jokingly refers to himself as such on stage.

Review An idea hatched when Bruce contributed the song "We Shall Overcome" to a 1998 Pete Seeger tribute record, The Seeger Sessions was conceived as a new-millennium retelling of songs popularized by the folk icon, but it's an album that's about a thousand times more fun than that might suggest...What we have here is a side project, a toss-off, a lark. Springsteen's studio work is so meticulously calculated, honed, edited and re-honed again (here's a guy who by my unscientific count has junked at least six full records, and left his two most famous unreleased songs off of his four-disc outtake box), that hearing such a breezy, drinky effort is both fun as hell and a breath of fresh air. In many ways, it's about time.

Review I'm not going to lie to you...I've never been a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. I can appreciate the man's songwriting talents, but he and I have never struck a chord. That being said, I absolutely love folk music. So when I heard about a project in which Bruce Springsteen would pay tribute to the songs of Pete Seeger, my interest (and skepticism) was piqued...I took a risk and bought the album, and I was blown away. These songs, so comfortable in the gentle embrace of Seeger's soothing voice, erupt in towering plumes of vitality as Springsteen growls and shouts his way through raucous renditions of normally more placid tunes.
