Pretty good primer, but some information is old
This book lists all the major protocol categories, and covers the major member of each one. However, there's some issues. Kerberos and SNMP are not covered enough. In the edition I have, some of the knowledge is old. For example, It claims that only IE and Opera support TLS 1.2. It also does not include any version of HTTP above 1.2. However, what is covered is covered well. Ping is well explained, as is the entire network stack. TCP and UDP both get full explanations, as do both versions of IP. The email explanations are all excellent. So while it's old and insufficient in a few areas, I fully recommend this book.
