A Heisman Star Remembered
At Syracuse University, Ernie Davis was the backfield successor to Jim Brown and the man who helped to bring Floyd Little to the university. The Express, which was first published in 1999 and updated in 2008, takes a look at the all-too-brief life of Davis, who helped lead Syracuse to its only undefeated season, then won a Heisman two years later. Robert C. Gallagher, like Davis, is a Syracuse alum who takes a dignified look at a man who may have been in the minority in so many ways, but never took any of it too personally. He talked with his ability, and never let people dwell on the leukemia that eventually claimed his life. Gallagher, though, focuses more on the undefeated season than the rest of Davis's life, and gives near saintly qualities to the man remembered as "The Elmira Express." Still, Gallagher brings to life an era of football that was different in more ways than one.
