Product Overview

It is generally recognized by historians that Henry Herbert Molyneux, fourth Earl of Carnarvon (1831-1890), figured prominently in Conservative high politics during the second half of the nineteenth century, serving under three Prime Ministers in all the Conservative governments between 1858 and 1886. He was also a member of the Cabinet in three of them, appointed as Colonial Secretary twice, and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland during the Home Rule crisis of 1885-1886. This book is based on the comparatively neglected diaries that he meticulously kept throughout his life. They show him to be a shrewd observer of events, and the records of his conversations with the leaders of the Conservative Party, as well as with political opponents, are of the greatest interest. Few such political diaries of Cabinet ministers on this scale and significance have survived. This study has also drawn on many archive collections containing Carnarvon's correspondence and memoranda. As a reformer, he took an interest in such causes as women's franchise, religious toleration, educational reform, and the movement for promoting anti-vivisection. As a man of letters, he was well acquainted with many of the celebrated literary figures of his time, including Browning and Tennyson. His passion for archaeology was transmitted to his son, who was closely involved in the discovery of the Tutankhamun treasures. This book will be of value to political, colonial, and social historians, as well as of great interest to those concerned with all aspects of nineteenth-century Britain.
