Hoffman at his best

on 1/19/2009

Dustin Hoffman is very convincing as a woman and not bad looking which you can't say about many men in drag. I think we all need a "Tootsie" as a friend.

Product Overview

Michael Dorsey is a talented actor, but his demanding nature and stubborn temperament have antagonized every producer in New York. Now his agent insists no one will hire him. But Michael needs money - eight thousand dollars to be exact - and to earn it, he's willing to play the role of a lifetime. Dustin Hoffman stars with Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray and Geena Davis in director Sydney Pollack's heart-filled classic that heralded a new era of Hollywood wig-flipping and set a new standard for unpredictable laugh-out-loud comedy.

Review "Tootsie" is a lulu. Remarkably funny and entirely convincing, film pulls off the rare accomplishment of being an in-drag comedy which also emerges with three-dimensional characters. Dustin Hoffman's first pic since his Oscar win for "Kramer Vs. Kramer" has b.o. smash written all over it...Film instantly takes flight with charm and confidence and stays aloft thereafter with nary a bump in the ride. Hoffman portrays a long-struggling New York stage actor whose 'difficult' reputation has relegated him to employment as a waiter and drama coach. The frustrating realities of the thespian profession are deftly sketched, and after 20 minutes it's clear that, having reached a dead-end, desperate measures are called for if he's ever going to make it...Sydney Pollack registers a double whammy of his own by virtue of his beautifully sustained direction as well as his vastly amusing supporting performance as Hoffman's agent. There can be little question that "Tootsie" marks Pollack's top career achievement to date...Script by Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisgal (with reported, but uncredited, assist from Elaine May) is a model of comic construction and contains numerous belly laughs as well as constant chuckles.

Review One of the most endearing things about "Tootsie," a movie in which Dustin Hoffman plays a middle-aged actress, is that the actress is able to carry most of her own scenes as herself - even if she weren't being played by Hoffman. "Tootsie" works as a story, not as a gimmick...It also works as a lot of other things. "Tootsie" is the kind of Movie with a capital M that they used to make in the 1940s, when they weren't afraid to mix up absurdity with seriousness, social comment with farce, and a little heartfelt tenderness right in there with the laughs. This movie gets you coming and going..."Tootsie" has a lot of fun with its plot complications; we get almost every possible variation on the theme of mistaken sexual identities. The movie also manages to make some lighthearted but well-aimed observations about sexism. It also pokes satirical fun at soap operas, New York show business agents and the Manhattan social pecking order. And it turns out to be a touching love story, after all - so touching that you may be surprised how moved you are at the conclusion of this comedy.
