Review [Incident] Terrific plotting, marvelous music and Toshiro Mifune are three reasons to pick up Incident at Blood Pass, an AnimEigo Samurai Cinema release. From the opening scene, in which Mifune's 'Yojimbo' character is sent on a mysterious assignment, the narrative pulls the viewer along with one unexpected turn after another. Shintaro Katsu co-stars in the 1970 production, in which a group of people, several having ulterior motives, gather at an inn by a mountain pass. There are several good sword fights, but most of the film's pleasure comes from the performances of the stars and the constant shifts of attitude in the story.

Review [Zatoichi] Shintaro Katsu is the one and only Zatoichi! A warm-hearted, blind masseur, occasional gangster and defender of justice. He is possessed of superlative swordsman skill and is capable of slaughtering 20 men in one lop-sided attack. His trouble is fleeing from his tortured and violent well as he prodigious and well deserved reputation as a samurai. Toshiro Mifune recreates Yojimbo, the mercenary bodyguard also holder of legendary samurai-sword yielding skills.

Review [Red] Taking an initially comic approach to depicting the turbulent fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Kihachi Okamoto directs a mesmerizing Toshiro Mifune in Red Lion. It's a hugely underrated jidai geki classic that has everything; outstanding acting, loads of laughs, heart-wrenching drama, plot twists, and vicious swordplay.I absolutely loved this story. It starts out very funny and slowly becomes darker and more complex as more detail is masterfully revealed. But the initial charm and life that flows from each of the characters never diminishes.
