Product Overview

In the tradition of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Warriors of Heaven and Earth weaves a thread of battle, comradeship and honor.

Set in the ferocious Gobi Desert, the story follows Lieutenant Li (Jiang Wen) and Japanese emissary Lai Xi (Nakai Kiichi), both first-class warriors and master swordsmen. After decades of service to the Chinese Emperor, Lai Xi longs to return to Japan, but is instead sent to the west to chase wanted criminals. His only passport back to Japan is to capture and execute Lieutenant Li, a renegade soldier wanted for leading a violent mutiny when he refused orders to kill female and child prisoners.

Li and Lai Xi battle, but finally agree to delay their final personal fight until the caravan carrying a Buddhist monk is brought to safety. The monk, however, is carrying a sacred and powerful pagoda that attracts the attention of the region's ruthless overlord, Master An (Wang Xuengi). Lai Xi and Lt. Li, accompanied by Li's former posse of soldiers, who have forsaken their peaceful new lives to return to his side, must face the cruelty of the desert, the region's barbaric bandits and the brutality of the overlord's men before they can finally face one another.

ReviewSource DVD Verdict
Review Warriors of Heaven and Earth, at first glance, seems the odd man out in recent historical mythic Chinese epics, and has garnered some dismissive reviews as of late in comparisons to more popular films of recent years. While admittedly not as sophisticated as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon nor as visually mesmeric as Hero or House Of Flying Daggers, such comparisons are not really that apt. Warriors takes radically different in approach and style, and actually has more in common with spaghetti westerns like Once Upon A Time In The West than its Chinese martial art brethren. Call it a "noodle western" if it makes you feel better...Warriors of Heaven and Earth, though not quite perfect, is a great Chinese blockbuster of a film. It is stylish, easily accessible, quite beautiful in its own right, and though it lacks the same visual flair of the aforementioned films, features some impressive swordfights and beautiful cinematography of its own.

Review Less ostentatious than Hero and a good deal more fun, Warriors of Heaven and Earth is an unapologetically grandiose period piece. Everything has been super-sized: the performances run the short gamut between stone-faced heroism and moustache-twirling villainy, the desert landscapes loom ominously in wide-screen, and the score offers rousing fanfares with alarming regularity...Subtlety, then, is not the order of the day. Rather, writer-director He Ping has seemingly fashioned his film with accessibility as his chief aim. And on that front, he's succeeded. Warriors of Heaven and Earth is entertaining without being at all challenging, redeeming its tired thematic leitmotifs of honour among swordsmen (see also: virtually every Chinese action film ever made) with truly spectacular visual presentation and enough plot for an entire miniseries.

Andrew Sun, The Hollywood Reporter ...the acting is uniformly compelling, the fight sequences are energetic...the material is especially enthralling.
Jami Bernard, New York Daily News A magnificent looking and occasionally very silly Chinese Western.
Rick Groen, The Globe & Mail The spaghetti western may be dead, but the noodle eastern looks to be alive and well.
