I've had 14 Different WDC Hard Drives over the years and Only one of these 14 went bad. NONE of these 14 even EVER had a bad sector!!!!! This model 120Gb HD ATA/100 SE [SE=Special Edition = 8mb buffer=JB] is competively priced in this case[IMHO]. This ATA100 & 8mb buffer HD REALLY performs with SPEED!!!!!! Easy Install, worry free, fast operations!!! I always buy WDC now, and BUY.com has had excellent deals on the WDC [SE]/JB 160Gb, 180Gb, and 200Gb models in the recent past!

I'm typically used the Quantum Hard Drives (now Maxtor). This is the first WD I've bought for a long time now. I've had no problem installing the HD. My computer recongnized it with no problems. I've filled the drive 100+ GB of video data being processed and so far there hasn't been any corruptions. I've burned CDRs using images of stored on this drive while listening to mp3s stored on the drive and there were no buffer underruns. All in all it has been able to handle everything I throw at it for the past 4 months.

Product Overview

WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition, the latest addition to Western Digital's reliable, award-winning hard drive family, is designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance hard drives such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file server applications. The WD Caviar 120 GB Special Edition is equipped with an 8 MB buffer - the largest buffer available today in a 7200 RPM desktop EIDE hard drive, delivering data to users faster than any hard drive in its class. The Special Edition hard drive provides a higher percentage of cache hits than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk, and also to "pre-fetch" information that is likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupted by mechanical operations.
