The Apex of a cappella Choral Singing
Stephen Layton, leading his choral group: Polyphony, has taken a cappella singing to a new level. The singing and harmonies on this disk are so ravishingly beautiful as to give me goose bumps when I listen to it, as I just did -- three times!! The harmonies are so gorgeous that it almost makes one cry. If this recording fails to lift one's spirit, then one better look for an undertaker. This is the very apex of choral singing, and the choice of material also complements the agility of his singers. The 14 cuts are all credited to the young American, Eric Whitacre. I single out for special praise: (in their order of appearance): Sleep; When David heard; Cloudburst; and Her sacred spirit soars. Get this CD, it's choral heaven.
