Product Overview

Ireland 1920: workers from field and country unite to form volunteer guerrilla armies to face the ruthless "Black and Tan" squads that are being shipped from Britain to block Ireland's bid for independence.

Driven by a deep sense of duty and a love for his country, Damien abandons his burgeoning career as a doctor and joins his brother, Teddy, in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom.

As the freedom fighters' bold tactics bring the British to the breaking point, both sides finally agree to a treay to end the bloodshed. But, despite the apparent victory, civil war erupts and families who fought side by side, find themselves pitted against one another as sworn enemies, putting their loyalties to the ultimate test.

Review Upsetting expected winners Volver, Babel, and Marie Antoinette at the 2006 Cannes fest, Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes the Barley ended up taking the prize. Stridently political in its telling of the birth of the IRA and its eventual separation into factions, Loach has been working towards this for most of his life. His films have always been political but they've been hidden under the guise of modern social workings. Here, for better or for worse, the politics are coaxed to the foreground and the story braves harsh waters to balance the politics and the humanity of its subject matter...Barley succeeds despite its hesitations and far-reaching ambition to tell such a large story in such modest terms. Ken Burns would struggle to contain this. You can't knock Loach's passion though; it's what keeps the film's head out of the clouds.

Review Damien is a doctor; he can do more good in England. Or so he thinks until he views one too many outrageous examples of English tyranny and joins his older brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney) and the other rebels. That is the set-up of The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Ken Loach's magnificent look back at a sorry chapter in British and Irish history. This is the little film that could, the one that beat such highly touted films as Volver and Babel to win the Palme D'Or at Cannes. And deservedly so: Loach tells a horrifying, moving, and completely mesmerizing tale...Damien is not a hero in any traditional sense; certain actions he takes haunt him, but his eyes are the prisms through which Ireland's situation is viewed, and he makes that situation very clear. And so does Loach in this unforgettable drama that adds an intriguing new wrinkle to an oft-told tale.
