Product Overview

With the runaway international acclaim of this film, Taiwanese director Edward Yang could no longer be called Asian cinema's best-kept secret. Yi Yi swiftly follows a middle-class family in Taipei over the course of one year, beginning with a wedding and ending with a funeral. Whether chronicling middle-aged father NJ's tenuous flirtations with an old flame or precocious young son Yang-Yang's attempts at capturing reality with his beloved camera, Yang imbues every gorgeous frame with a deft, humane clarity. Warm, sprawling, and dazzling, this intimate epic is one of the undisputed masterworks of the new century.

Review There was a time when a film from Taiwan would have seemed foreign and unfamiliar--when Taiwan had a completely different culture from ours. The characters in "Yi Yi" live in a world that would be much the same in Toronto, London, Bombay, Sydney; in their economic class, in their jobs, culture is established by corporations, real estate, fast food and the media, not by tradition. NJ and Yang-Yang eat at McDonald's, and other characters meet in a Taipei restaurant named New York Bagels. Maybe the movie is not simply about knowing half of the truth, but about knowing the wrong half of the truth.

Review In Yi Yi (A One and A Two), his superb portrait of a Taipei family, Taiwanese writer/director Edward Yang reinvents such hoary archetypes, instilling his characters with the unpredictably and fragility of real people. Schoolboy Yang-Yang (Jonathan Chang), the family's youngest member, gets in trouble for his philosophical musings, not his Bart Simpson-esque antics (those come later). The teenaged Ting-Ting (Kelly Lee) becomes smitten with her best friend's boyfriend. N.J. (Wu Nienjen), the family bread-earner, is torn between his duplicitous business partners and Mr. Ota (Issei Ogata), a disarmingly honest Japanese programmer whose services they alternately require and reject. Mother Min-Min (Elaine Jin) eschews bonding with her family in weepy, soft-lit scenes, instantly hightailing it off to a mountain monastery instead.
