When you push the button, the gasket expands, pushing the fin against the POP Container walls to create an airtight barrier. Being able to pull the lid off without using the push-button does not mean the lid wasn't sealed. Pulling the lid off temporarily "breaks" the contact between the flexible silicone seal around the lid and the Container walls - allowing air to come in and the lid to come off.
