Giftcards.com prints and sells customized gift cards. Founder Jason Wolfe launched the business in 1999 as DirectCertificate.com, and, four years later, bought the domain name that would help make his company famous: Giftcards.com.
Wolfe is no stranger to hardship and setbacks. Orphaned as a child, he attended the Milton Hershey School, a boarding school supported by Milton and Catherine Hershey, of Hershey chocolate fame. After college, Wolfe ended up homeless. It was while living in his car that he taught himself to code. DirectCertificate.com, the company that would become Giftcards.com, was his first project.
After the debut of Giftcards.com, the company’s growth exploded. After being named the Pittsburgh Tech Council’s 2015 tech CEO of the year and awarded the 2013 Pennsylvania Governor's ImPAct Award and the 2015 Pittsburgh Business Times’ Diamond Award, Wolfe sold the company to Blackhawk Network Holdings in 2016 for $120 million.
