A List of Prominent Stores Staying Closed on Thanksgiving 2022

As Thanksgiving approaches, many shoppers are thinking about Black Friday. For many retail workers, however, the question of whether they need to work on Black Friday may hang over their heads. For many years, companies had pushed their Black Friday deals earlier and earlier until they started on the afternoon of Thanksgiving. The COVID-19 pandemic changed this for many companies, however, and some started closing their doors on Thanksgiving starting in 2020. How many companies are continuing this trend? Here’s what you need to know about stores staying closed on Thanksgiving.

Confirmed Stores Closed on Thanksgiving 2022

This Thanksgiving, some stores have directly confirmed that they’re going to stay closed.

Best Buy

In an early October press release, Best Buy confirmed that it will stay closed on Thanksgiving, but you can still find deals online. From Oct. 30 through the end of the holiday season, however, the company is extending its daily hours, moving to 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

This family-owned department store chain in the Northeastern United States confirmed in August that it would be closed on Thanksgiving. The company’s CEO told news outlets that he hoped it would become the “new norm” among all companies.

For many years, Costco has stayed closed on Thanksgiving. It also closes on other federal holidays, such as New Year’s and Labor Day, so it’s no surprise to anyone familiar with Costco.

In an early October news release, JCPenney announced it was going to keep all of its stores closed on Thanksgiving. It’s going to open extra early on Black Friday, however, with stores opening at 5 a.m. and early shoppers getting special coupons.

Similar to many other retailers, Kohl’s announced in October that it would close all its stores on Thanksgiving. The company will start its Black Friday sale online on Thanksgiving, however, so you can start getting some great deals early.

In the Macy’s Black Friday ad scan, the company confirmed it will be closed on Thanksgiving. The company’s online Black Friday sales start as early as Nov. 20, however, with some pre-Black Friday events you can take advantage of starting Nov. 7.

REI started closing on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday as part of its #OptOutside initiative, encouraging people to get outdoors and enjoy themselves. The company has decided to make the decision permanent, so its stores will be closed on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Sam’s Club

As with Costco, Sam’s Club has been closed on Thanksgiving for many years. You can expect the retailer to stick to its normal hours on Black Friday, regardless of any Black Friday deals it may be offering.

Target is one of the brands that has decided to embrace the “staying closed on Thanksgiving” tradition. In November 2021, the CEO announced that Target was planning to stay closed on Thanksgiving permanently, making it part of the company’s planned closures every year.

As in 2021, Ulta has decided to remain closed on Thanksgiving. The company hopes to allow its employees to spend time with their loved ones throughout the Thanksgiving celebrations to make Black Friday even more special.

Walmart plans to close on Thanksgiving 2022, just as in 2021. The company recently launched its “Deals for Days” Black Friday event, however, which means you’ll find Black Friday sales throughout the month.

It isn’t necessarily a sure shot that these stores will be closed in 2022, but it’s more likely that they’ll be closed than that they’ll be open. Here are a few of the stores that were closed on Thanksgiving in 2021, which may mean they’ll be closed in 2022 as well.

  • Ann Taylor
  • Barnes and Noble
  • Banana Republic
  • Crate and Barrel
  • Foot Locker
  • Half Price Books
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Ashley HomeGoods

Stores Generally Open on Thanksgiving

Some stores tend to stay open on Thanksgiving, but often with reduced hours. Here are some of the options you may be able to visit.

  • Albertsons
  • Bass Pro Shops
  • Big Lots
  • CVS
  • Cabela’s
  • Dollar General
  • Family Dollar
  • Kroger
  • Safeway
  • Sprouts Farmers Market
  • Starbucks (individual locations may choose to close)
  • Whole Foods Market

  • Are these stores also closed for Black Friday?

Generally, even stores that are closed on Thanksgiving will be open on Black Friday, with the notable exception of REI, which has hosted an #OptOutside campaign for the past few years. The exact hours each store opens for Black Friday will vary by store and by location, however, with some stores opening as early as 4 a.m. and some not opening until 10 a.m. If you’re considering shopping in-store on Black Friday, it’s best to check with individual stores.

  • Are there other shopping holidays when I might be able to shop at these stores?

The two most common shopping holidays after Black Friday are Cyber Monday and Green Monday. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday, and it’s most commonly used as a way for companies to offer online-only sales and discounts you can get instead of shopping in-store on Black Friday. Green Monday is a sales event that happens on the second Monday of December, giving your packages ample time to get to your door before Christmas. No matter which ones you choose, they’re a great way to get deals on Christmas presents.

  • Can I place online orders at these retailers on Thanksgiving?

You’ll generally be able to place online orders on Thanksgiving even if the store is closed. Your purchases may take longer to arrive than orders placed at other times, however, due to the influx of orders the company is likely to receive from Black Friday and Cyber Monday and the fact that it’s right before a long weekend. Assume the online orders won’t get shipped until Monday or Tuesday if you place them on Thanksgiving.
